Are the "Beatitudes" found in Matthew 5 limited to Christians only?

I think so. My bible's commentary says: "'Blessed' here refers to the ultimate well-being and distinctive spiritual joy of those who share in the salvation of the kingdom of God."
I don't think we can be "pure in heart, or hunger and thirst after righteousness, ect." on our own. Don't we become those things as we seek to be like Christ which is what being a "Christian" is all about.
I am not sure I agree. Think about Jesus' audience for a minute: Would you call them Christians? Rememer the term "Christian" wasn't coined yet. Who was Jesus speaking to? Did they "believe in Jesus" or did they have "Jesus in their heart"?
It was not like the disciples decided they would have a Sunday service with Jesus as their preacher preaching to the christians who decided to show up to church that morning. If they intended it to be "seeker sensitive" service than one of thoes guys forgot to tell Jesus.

Kim, I should have said that "I don't think I agree that the Beattitudes are resereved for 'Christians'". I agree with your second paragraph.
